Top 5 DIY Skin Care Products Made Using Essential Oils

These days, you can choose from a wide array of essential oils. Some are great for relaxing, boosting energy, managing soreness and eliminating bad odors. You can also make skin care products out of these fragrant and healthy oils.

Word of Caution

Before mixing essential oils and other ingredients, you should know that not all of them are safe for your skin. Rue, camphor, hyssop, horseradish and southernwood essential oils shouldn’t come in contact with your skin.

Many essential oils can be used for skin care as long as they’re mixed with a carrier oil. Without the latter, applying them may cause burns and irritations.

Coconut oil is the most used carrier oil. You can also replace it with an avocado oil. These carrier oils are usually odorless. They don’t cause bad effects to the skin as well.

If you run out of these oils, you can use unscented body lotion as a substitute. Aloe vera gels are another great alternative.

If you have sensitive skin, it may be best to avoid essential oils altogether. In case you don’t have such type, feel free to make and use the following homemade skin care products.

Sweet and Fragrant Body Scrub

No other product exfoliates better than body scrubs. Aside from removing dead skin cells, they also cleanse and improve blood circulation. You can counter that using honey, apple cider vinegar, coconut oil and tea tree oil. Honey and apple cider vinegar are known for their anti-bacterial properties. The vinegar helps tighten the skin as well. Tea tree oil also prevents acne, moisturizes the skin, and reduces blemishes.

Tea tree essential oil doesn’t just minimize blemishes. It also prevents breakouts which usually trigger or worsen unwanted marks on the skin. Lemon essential oil can also act the same. As for the eucalyptus essential oil, it helps repel ticks. Tick bites are itchy. Scratching them is bound to give you some scars. Thus, it’s best to apply some tick repelling oil in your skin.

Lavender oil alone is enough to soothe your mind as well. However, it gets even better when you mix it with geranium and ylang-ylang essential oils. The floral scent of geranium essential oil is repelling for many insects. As for ylang-ylang, it helps you manage blemishes in your skin.

  5. Use a cotton ball if you intend to apply it on skin irritations. To use as a perfume, pour small amounts on your wrists and then scrub them off to your clothes.

After using the abovementioned products, make sure you lessen your exposure to the sun, too. Some essential oils increase your skin’s sensitivity to ultraviolet rays. While they may improve your look for now, they may end up helping the sun damage your skin.

Don’t worry though. When you’re on a break from any essential oils, you can enjoy the outdoors. Just make sure you apply moisturizer and sunscreen on a daily basis.
